Vision

Our vision for the Wycombe Sporting Village will bring many benefits to the people of Wycombe.

The Wycombe Sporting Village will create over 400 hundred long term sustainable jobs. It will provide high quality facilities, encouraging participation in exercise and healthier lifestyles and contributing to the battle against the silent epidemic of obesity. NHS estimates suggest that 21.1% of adults in Wycombe are obese. It will provide training and development opportunities for young people, leading to employment. Independent estimates suggest that these benefits alone could generate at least £125million worth of social return over 25 years.

The Wycombe Sporting Village will provide a huge range of sporting opportunities. Alongside hosting Wycombe Wanderers Football Club and Wasps Rugby Club, in a state of the art 17,500 capacity stadium, it will also provide world class facilities for people of all ages and levels of ability to engage and participate in sport. On their doorstep, the community will have some of the best facilities in the county in which to take part in a wide variety of sports including football, rugby, hockey, badminton and squash. Stars of the future, from this area and beyond, will be able to refine their skills in the sporting academy; workmates will be able to have a friendly five a side after a day’s work and youngsters will be able to practise next to where their heroes play. The cricket pitch may just provide us with the next Cook, Kallis or Khan. The Wycombe Sporting Village will bring together all backgrounds and walks of life.  In any one day, you’ll witness an A to Z of sporting activity, from aerobics to zumba fitness classes.

The Wycombe Sporting Village is not only about sports. The Village is built on sporting values and seeks to promote these. We believe that sport has the power to transcend personal, political and philosophical differences in society and work as a positive force for good in tackling social challenges. We believe that sporting values like respect, fair play, endeavour and team work are critical in a civilised society. Applying sporting values in practice means that the Village has a strong commitment to local people who want to get on through endeavour and hard work. We want to offer space for small local firms to start up and we want to support them to innovate and grow, in the process creating new opportunities for others. We will offer an inspirational space where larger businesses can meet and plan for the future.  Across the Village we will support local businesses, prioritising where possible local suppliers and local produce. Building on Wycombe’s proud creative heritage, the Wycombe Sporting Village will showcase the talents and entrepreneurship within our District to a wider audience. This will help to stimulate greater interest and investment from outside the area, bringing a whole host of potential benefits for businesses across the District.

The Wycombe Sporting Village will also offer affordable first homes that allow young families and key workers the chance to move beyond renting. We have placed sustainability at the heart of our plans. We want to create homes that are cutting edge in terms of energy efficiency whilst also reflecting the tradition and character of Wycombe. Much of our inspiration has come from the Duke of Cornwall’s Poundbury development.

We also see the opportunity to expand educational choice for parents in Wycombe. The Village provides an ideal location for summer camps and after school activity clubs. More broadly, the Village has the potential to accommodate a free school or academy. Too many children in Wycombe travel outside the town to receive their education, restricting social integration and increasing carbon emissions.

Wherever we have planned or considered development we have always been clear that it should bring clear social, economic and community benefits. We are in the business of meeting society’s challenges not adding to them.

Our commitment to respecting the environment is central to our approach. We have spent considerable time and energy ensuring that the Village will represent the cutting edge in environmentally responsible development. The Village will be the most environmentally friendly development in the history of Wycombe. Onsite we aim to promote an active policy of environmental conservation, ensuring that we not only protect the environment but also enable the community to participate in green initiatives. Whether through recycling or finding out more about our naturally harvested electricity and water re-use, there is scope for all ages to get involved. Much of our inspiration has come from discussions with Sir Tim Smit at the Eden Project. Built development will form a small fraction of the total site.

The Village will offer many sustainable social and economic benefits to the people of Wycombe. It will bring jobs and investment, health and lifestyle benefits, educational and training opportunities and world class leisure and sporting facilities. It will bring people a wealth of new possibilities, unleashing fresh potential.

The Wycombe Sporting Village will enable the community, the council and business to work in partnership to address the challenges and opportunities of the future. Together, we can build a better future for Wycombe.

This indicating that 21.1% of adults are obese and 20.3% of adults smoke. We have amended our figures accordingly.
